What is Gum Disease?
Gum diseases occur when bacteria accumulates around the gum line, which may cause gum irritation, bleeding, inflammation and soreness. If left untreated, gum disease can infect both the gum tissue and the bone, resulting in gum recession, bone deterioration and tooth loss.
Treatment controls the infection to prevent any further damage to the gums and teeth. Depending on the extent of the gum disease, there are several variations in gum treatment.
For less severe cases, a thorough deep-cleaning called scaling and root planning is performed. This removes the plaque and scraping off the tartar from above and below the gum line. Root planning rids of the difficult spots on the root of the tooth where bacteria accumulates.
In addition to deep cleaning, our dentists may recommend medication to supplement the gum treatment. Based off the severity of how much the gum disease has progressed medication may prevent surgical treatment.
Two types of surgey may be performed for intense cases of gum disease. Flap Surgey may be necessary if inflammation of the gums remains after deep cleaning and medications. This surgey removes tartar deposits and keeps the area clean. For instances where loss of bone or gum tissue occurs, suggestion to perform bone and tissue grafts may take place. This form of gum treatment is a natural or synthetic graft to promote growth in the affected areas.
